Schools Minister Vernon Coaker has confirmed plans to introduce a new primary curriculum, in which languages will for the first time be a compulsory element. The new legislation is based on the proposals of the Independent Review of the Primary Curriculum conducted by Sir Jim Rose. Languages will be part of a new Area of Learning entitled “Understanding English, Communication and Languages”. Following the consultation Ministers have also decided that the programme of learning for languages will be phased in over 4 years to give schools and teachers time to build up expertise and develop progression routes. Significantly this decision is also linked to a commitment to continue funding teacher training routes for new primary teachers with a languages specialism and to continue to provide professional development opportunities for existing teachers to develop their languages teaching skills.
